Principal Ana Gallardo Lobaina honoured by Cuban Ambassador

On 19 November we were honoured to welcome the Ambassador of Cuba, His Excellency Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, to make a special presentation of an artwork by Cuban visual artist Yosvany Martínez Pérez to Principal Ana Gallardo Lobaina.

In Cuba, it is a cherished tradition to extend symbolic recognitions to principal dancers, who embody the artistry, discipline, and collective spirit of their entire company. These gestures, often delivered on stage, are a heartfelt tribute to their talent and to the institution they so gracefully represent.

“ Ana is the product of the exceptional training provided by the Cuban National Ballet, an institution renowned worldwide for its rigorous and comprehensive system of instruction from an early age—combining discipline, technical mastery, artistic expression, and a profound love for dance. This formative process not only develops outstanding technique but also instills values such as dedication, passion, and commitment to the arts, qualities that Ana has carried with distinction throughout her international career.

Today, we are delighted to see a dancer born and trained in Cuba take her place among the principal figures of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, bringing her talent, sensitivity, and energy to this company. The recognition we are presenting to Ana today is a testament to her tireless work, unwavering perseverance, and artistic excellence.”
